THE GREY COAT HOSPITAL
The Grey Coat Hospital is a Church of England school for girls with a mixed Sixth Form. We have a strong pastoral structure, ensuring that every student is known as a person and is set on the path to realising his or her potential within the context of a caring Christian community.
In March 2009 we were given an 'outstanding' judgement by Ofsted for the second time running. In recent years we have usually had more than 85% of our students achieving 5+ A*-C grades in GCSE. Results at A level are also high and the majority of our students go on to University.
We are a specialist school for languages - we believe that languages are the key to the future, and that proficiency in a foreign language will open doors for students of every discipline. As a Language College, we have worked hard to achieve the International School Award, which recognises how our international ethos permeates the whole school curriculum. In September 2008 we were also awarded a second specialism by the DCSF for being a 'high performing specialist school' and subsequently became a Training School.
We are looking forward to the development of a new Arts block under the BSF programme. This new building will incorporate music, drama and art as well as allowing for RE and film studies to be taught in a more appropriate environment. Some remodelling and refurbishment will also be completed in the existing building, including the gym, library and two new history classrooms. Cooling will be provided for south facing classrooms which suffer from over-heating in the summer. There will also be improved staff accomodation.
Headteacher Rachel Allard says, 'The school has been short of space for a very long time and the new block will provide outstanding new facilities for Drama, Music, Film Studies and Art, whilst maximising outdoor space available for PE lessons and extending the dining areas for students.'
